About This Rug

This handmade antique wool rug dates to circa 1900. An ornate ivory medallion stands against a deep navy field, surrounded by small pink blossoms and delicate floral trails. Its compact rectangular proportions give the detailed composition a clear, balanced framework.

The medallion contains curving stems, flowering branches, and a smaller dark central motif. Dusty pink, olive, beige, and soft blue details enrich the pale ground. A pointed, serrated outline separates the centre from the surrounding navy.

Scalloped Botanical Panels

Large botanical panels extend inward from both sides of the field. Their scalloped edges and muted gold colouring create a distinctive contrast with the darker background. Smaller flowers and fine branching lines fill these broad forms.

Trails of tiny rosettes curve around the centre and end panels. Some are ivory, while others introduce soft pink accents. These dotted floral arrangements bring a lighter rhythm to the spaces between the larger motifs.

Contrasting End Panels

The two ends differ in colour, with brick red at one end and ochre at the other. Both carry floral ornament within pointed, scalloped outlines. This contrast gives the rug individuality without disrupting the repeated botanical language.

A broad navy border alternates rosettes, stylised palmettes, and connecting stems. Narrower ivory bands carry small flowers and dark leaves. Together, these borders frame the field while repeating its softer accent colours.

Hand-Knotted Wool Construction

The rug is handmade and hand-knotted in wool. A folded-corner photograph shows the reverse weave alongside the patterned face. The low pile allows the woven structure to show through in worn areas.

Measuring approximately 188 × 124.5 cm, it offers a compact format with a clearly defined central design. Its appeal lies in the floral drawing, contrasting panels, and aged surface rather than a thick, uniform pile.

Condition

The pile is low and uneven, with widespread age-related wear. Areas across the field and botanical panels reveal the underlying weave. Colour and surface texture vary throughout.

The borders and side edges also show wear. Fringe remnants are uneven, with loose threads and some fraying at the ends. The outline has minor irregularities.

Please examine the close-up photographs of the field, medallion, borders, ends, and reverse before purchasing. Display or gentle use in a low-traffic position would suit its worn condition.
