The most powerful and sculpturally commanding of its series — a boldly carved miniature African face mask in ebonized hardwood, produced in West Africa during the mid-twentieth century, distinguished by a twin-prong crest of refined elegance and a face of exceptional psychological presence.
The bifurcated crest rises in two tall, slender parallel prongs — more attenuated and elegant than the standard twin-horn form — each carved along its inner edge with three precise horizontal incision bands and along the outer edges with diagonal slash marks that add directional energy to the upward thrust. The transition zone between crest and face is the most elaborately carved of the series: a complex multi-register scarification band layering diagonal slashes, crosshatch blocks, and horizontal incisions — a richly textured threshold between the spiritual realm above and the human realm below.
The face is broader, more three-dimensional, and more emotionally present than its companions. Heavy-lidded eyes beneath a strong brow ridge; a broad, flattened nose with wide nostrils; full lips slightly parted — poised between speech and silence, between the human and the oracular. The prominent cheekbones and overall breadth suggest possible Fang or Makonde aesthetic influence, both traditions known for their volumetric, psychologically charged facial forms.
The ebonizing is the deepest and most uniform of the series — a rich, even black of great depth and warmth, polished to a lustrous finish that catches the light with particular intensity in the carved recesses.
Condition note: Front face carving and polish in excellent condition — the finest front-face condition of the four masks. Reverse shows extensive coating loss (disclosed, entirely invisible when displayed face-forward).
