A boldly carved miniature African face mask in ebonized hardwood, produced in West Africa — most likely Côte d’Ivoire or Ghana — during the mid-twentieth century. This piece is immediately distinguished by its bifurcated twin-horn crest: rather than a single point rising from the crown, the crest splits into two parallel prongs, each carved along its inner edge with fine parallel incisions that catch the light and add textural complexity to the ebonized surface.

The forked crest form appears in several West African mask traditions — most notably among the Senufo of Côte d’Ivoire — where it is associated with spiritual duality and the threshold between the human and spirit worlds.

The face is carved with considerable sculptural energy: a strong brow ridge surmounted by a crosshatch scarification band; deep-set eyes beneath heavy lids; a broad, prominent nose; and an open mouth with carved lips slightly parted — an expression of intensity or invocation that gives this piece a psychological presence quite different from the serene composure of the typical decorative mask.
