1920s American Hooked Cotton Runner
This handmade American cotton runner dates to circa the 1920s and features staggered rows of concentric diamonds. Scalloped bands of deep brown and muted olive connect the motifs across the narrow field. Its geometric composition balances strong outlines with softly varied interior colours.
Cream, oatmeal and beige form the dominant palette, enlivened by pale sage, dusty rose and small burgundy centres. Fine, irregular rings build outward around each central diamond. The combination creates a quilt-like rhythm while retaining the tactile character of hooked cotton.
Concentric Diamonds and Scalloped Lattice
The diamonds alternate along the runner rather than sitting in a single central row. Partial motifs meet the edges, making the pattern feel continuous. Dark scalloped bands intersect between the diamonds and provide a clear framework for the paler rings.
Some lattice sections appear almost black-brown, while others soften into olive and grey-green. This tonal contrast gives the design depth without introducing a large range of bright colours. Burgundy centres bring small, focused accents to the otherwise restrained surface.
The irregular outlines are part of the composition’s charm. Rings vary slightly in width, spacing and shade from one diamond to another. Their gentle differences prevent the repeated pattern from feeling rigid or mechanically uniform.
Hooked Cotton Surface
The hand-hooked construction produces a textured surface with visible variations in loop height. Closely worked passages sit beside softer, more raised areas. Changes in the direction of the loops add further movement to the pale geometric rings.
Narrow olive-tan fabric binding finishes the perimeter without competing with the lattice. The runner measures 5 feet 10 inches by 2 feet 1 inch. Its slender rectangular proportions make the repeating diamonds particularly effective when viewed along the length.
Condition
Good antique condition overall, with uneven surface wear and variations in loop height. Scattered raised or loose loops are visible, together with localised flattening. The binding has light wear, and the edges show minor waviness.
The surface retains tonal variation across the cream, oatmeal and pastel areas. These irregularities remain visible at close range and form part of the runner’s present appearance. Careful placement will help protect the raised and loose loops from unnecessary snagging.
