Linked Rosettes on a Cream Ground
This handmade American hooked cotton rug, circa 1920s, features repeating star-shaped rosettes across a warm cream ground. Fine dark lines link the motifs, creating a continuous geometric network.
Concentric scalloped outlines give each rosette a rippling appearance. Their softened points alternate with rounded indentations, balancing angular structure with flowing contours. Occasional brick-red centres introduce small, vivid accents within the restrained palette.
The composition extends across the entire field without a separate decorative border. Partial rosettes continue to the edges, giving the pattern a sense of movement beyond the rug’s outline.
Subtle Colour and Strong Outlines
Muted taupe, grey and beige form the principal bands within the rosettes. Faded blue and pale pink add quieter layers between the darker outlines. These subtle changes reward a closer look while preserving the overall graphic effect.
Charcoal lines define the scalloped forms and connect neighbouring motifs. Against the cream ground, they create a clear framework for the softer colours. The scattered red centres break the regular rhythm without dominating the composition.
Individual rosettes vary slightly in shape, colour and spacing. These differences give the repeating design a lively handmade character. Some centres remain pale, while others contain darker rings or small red accents.
The Character of Hooked Cotton
The hooked cotton surface has a visibly textured, irregular finish. Closely arranged loops follow the contours of the motifs and fill the surrounding ground. Changes in loop height create additional depth across the design.
A narrow beige binding finishes the perimeter without interrupting the all-over pattern. The outline is slightly irregular, with gently rounded corners. Its simple finishing keeps attention on the linked rosettes.
Measuring approximately 180.3 × 127 cm, this rug suits a study, bedroom or quiet reading area. The neutral palette works with natural wood, painted furniture and simple upholstery. Gentle use is preferable because of the localised thinning and loop losses.
Condition
Uneven surface wear is present, with scattered loose or missing loops and localised thinning within several motifs. Some worn areas expose the underlying structure. The hooked surface varies in height and density.
The beige binding shows minor fraying and wear. Slight waviness and irregularity are present along the edges. The repeating rosette design remains clearly defined despite the worn areas.
