About This Rug

This hand-knotted Turkish Anatolian wool rug dates to circa the 1920s. A dark, elongated hexagonal medallion anchors its richly coloured red field. Measuring approximately 91.4 × 132.1 cm, it combines compact proportions with a bold geometric composition.

Fine yellow, ivory, and dusty pink outlines define the medallion’s stepped edges. Angular floral forms and hooked details fill the charcoal-toned centre. Their slender lines contrast with the broader areas of red surrounding the central design.

Geometric Details and Colour

Four small diamond motifs punctuate the open field, arranged around the central medallion. Two muted green rosettes extend the composition along its length. Their softened outlines sit naturally within the worn red ground.

The broad taupe border carries a repeating sequence of serrated ornaments. Burgundy, ivory, yellow, orange, and olive accents give these motifs a lively rhythm. A narrower inner band introduces angular lines and small contrasting details.

Olive-green panels at both ends contain stylised flowering stems and rounded floral forms. These panels create a distinctive transition between the open field and surrounding border. The combination of geometric framing and botanical detail gives the rug much of its character.

Hand-Knotted Wool Construction

The rug is handmade and hand-knotted in wool. Its low surface allows the individual pattern elements and underlying weave to remain clearly visible. Variations in pile height and colour contribute to a textured, timeworn appearance.

The outline is slightly irregular, with closely worn ends rather than long fringes. These details should be considered alongside the overall design when choosing its placement.

Condition

Good overall condition for its age, with noticeable wear throughout. The pile is low and uneven, with scattered areas exposing the underlying weave. Wear is particularly apparent across the red field and dark medallion.

There are pale foundation points, worn border sections, edge wear, and closely worn ends. The outline shows slight irregularity, and the surface has visible colour variation. Please examine the photographs carefully, especially the detailed views of the field and borders.

This is a visibly worn rug, not a full-pile example. A quieter position with gentle use would suit its condition better than a busy passage.

Why It’s Special

The contrast between the restrained medallion and colourful serrated border gives this small rug a strong decorative identity. Its worn surface softens the pattern without concealing the distinctive arrangement of motifs.
