This hand-knotted Chinese Art Deco wool rug presents an elaborate floral basket against a deep teal ground. Attributed to circa 1920s, it combines an upright central bouquet with smaller floral arrangements at the corners.
Measuring approximately 63.5 × 124.5 cm, the rug has a compact, elongated format. Its decorative composition remains clearly defined within a narrow purple frame and fine golden-yellow inner line.
A Floral Basket Composition
A golden-yellow basket-shaped vessel rests on a raspberry-red stand with scrolling feet. Small coloured details decorate the vessel, adding another layer of pattern beneath the flowers.
Branching stems rise into an arrangement of pink, lilac, pale green and golden blossoms. Dark accents define individual petals, while curving leaves and buds extend between the larger flowers.
Long raspberry-coloured ribbons sweep outward from the basket, opening the composition across the field. Their broad curves balance the more upright stems and give the central arrangement a flowing outline.
Smaller floral sprays occupy the corners without joining into a continuous patterned border. Open areas of teal separate these details from the bouquet, allowing each element room to stand out.
