Joan Walsh Anglund Sommer Plate
Two girls paddle at the water’s edge in this vintage porcelain plate illustrated by Joan Walsh Anglund. The German title Sommer curves across the lower edge in green script. A blue crab, distant sailboats and a perched bird complete the gentle seaside scene.
The decoration combines pale blue water with soft yellow sand and fresh green foliage. Fine dark outlines give the illustration definition against the white porcelain. A narrow border follows the circular rim without competing with the central artwork.
A Summer Scene in Miniature
The blonde girl wears a straw hat with a blue ribbon, holding its brim as she stands in shallow water. Beside her, a brunette girl wears a yellow bow and carries a small red pail. Curving lines around their feet suggest ripples.
A blue crab occupies the sandy bank near the foreground. Behind the girls, small sailboats cross the bay. A red building and a small coastal tower rise above the shoreline in the distance.
A broad tree curves up the left side and extends its branches across the top. Small green leaves punctuate the branching outline. A blue bird perches above the water, balancing the figures below.
Printed Copyright and Reverse Mark
The lower edge carries the inscription © 1966 by Joan Walsh Anglund. This printed copyright forms part of the illustrated design. The reverse bears a blue tulip emblem above the Walther name and the number 6.
The decoration extends close to the rim, making the full plate part of the composition. At approximately 20 cm in diameter, it offers enough space to appreciate the small details. Its shallow profile measures approximately 3 cm high.
Decorative Display
A wire hanging loop attached to a circular adhesive mount is present on the reverse. Amber-coloured adhesive is visible around the mount. The hanging attachment remains separate from the printed maker’s mark.
The soft colours suit a collection of illustrated porcelain or nostalgic childhood imagery. Displayed on a shelf, the plate brings the entire seaside scene into view. Its circular shape gives the spreading branches and shoreline a natural frame.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition, with vivid colours and clear printed details. There are no chips, cracks or restoration. The Sommer title and copyright inscription remain readable.
The reverse mark is clear, and the wire hanging mount is present. Visible amber-coloured adhesive surrounds its circular attachment.
