An authentic and highly collectible antique hand-knotted Caucasian rug, woven circa 1880s in the Talish region of the southern Caucasus — one of the most distinctive and sought-after weaving traditions in the entire canon of Caucasian tribal carpet production. Talish rugs are prized by serious collectors for their bold, architecturally powerful compositions, their exceptional natural dye palette, and above all for their extraordinary wide ivory borders — a design signature so distinctive that a Talish rug is recognizable at a glance to any knowledgeable eye.

The field is a deep, saturated indigo navy — the color of a clear Caucasian night sky — covered in a dense, rhythmic allover lattice of stylized floral rosettes and leaf forms: small, tightly packed botanical motifs in ivory, terracotta red, sage green, and warm camel, arranged in diagonal rows that fill the field from end to end with the controlled abundance of a woven garden.

The main border is the defining glory of this rug — and of the Talish type as a whole. Exceptionally wide, on a warm natural ivory/camel ground, it carries a stately procession of large octagonal rosette medallions in deep terracotta red and midnight navy, each one a complex geometric construction of concentric rings, hooked arms, and central star forms. The sheer scale and visual weight of this border system — almost as wide as the field itself — is the Talish weaver's most audacious design statement.

The outer border is a deep teal-navy running diamond reciprocal stripe. Narrow inner guard borders in terracotta red with small geometric motifs complete the layered border system.

A canvas stabilization strip has been applied along one end — a conservation measure that preserves the structural integrity of the rug and is reflected honestly in the price. The pile is low throughout, consistent with nearly 150 years of existence — but the structure remains sound, the foundation intact, and the colors remarkably vivid. The natural dyes — indigo, madder, walnut, and undyed wool — have mellowed over a century and a half into a palette of extraordinary depth and harmony.

Talish rugs of this age and authentic tribal character are increasingly rare on the market, represented in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Textile Museum in Washington.
