A magnificent antique Caucasian Kazak rug of exceptional age, authenticity, and visual power — woven in the southwestern Caucasus in the 1880s, in the bold geometric tribal tradition that has made Kazak rugs among the most celebrated, most collected, and most immediately recognizable objects in the entire canon of Oriental rug art. At nearly 140 years of age, in good to very good overall condition with medium-high pile and strong natural colors throughout, this is a rug of genuine rarity and collector significance.

The composition is the classic Kazak single large medallion format — bold, architecturally powerful, designed to command a room with the authority of a work of monumental art. A large stepped polygon medallion dominates the field: its outer form a bold stepped shield in dusty rose antique pink — the characteristic “Kazak pink” of oxidized madder on high-altitude Caucasian wool, a color that no synthetic dye has ever successfully replicated — outlined in dark chocolate brown with a crisp ivory pearl-bead border. The medallion interior is a deep dark brown field containing a large ivory stepped cross or sunburst with four projecting arms, each terminating in a stepped hook, and at the very center a small ivory rectangle with a blue cross motif — a protective amulet form (gul) of great antiquity in the Caucasian weaving tradition.

The field is set on a deep royal blue indigo ground of extraordinary richness and depth — achieved through repeated immersion in natural indigo that has deepened over 140 years to a saturated, complex blue of great warmth and authority. The field surrounding the medallion is filled with a characteristic Kazak scatter of small geometric filler motifs — hooked diamonds, small stars, reciprocal arrow forms, and stylized bird and animal silhouettes rendered with the bold, slightly naïve energy of tribal weaving at its most authentic and most appealing.

The border system is multi-register and strongly articulated: a dark brown inner guard with a bold ivory running reciprocal hook meander; a main border on a dusty rose pink ground carrying a bold stepped geometric vine in dark brown and ivory; and outer guard borders completing the perimeter. The blue-purple overcast selvedge — a specific detail associated with several Kazak sub-groups — is intact and sound along the sides.

The wool is exceptional — the high-altitude Caucasian wool of the Kazak region is among the finest in the world: thick, lustrous, naturally resilient, with a slight wiry spring that gives antique Kazak pile its characteristic tactile richness. At 140 years of age, this wool retains its resilience and sheen. The natural dye palette has aged to a depth and complexity that is the exclusive property of time and natural chemistry.
