Floral Ornament on a Black Ground
This handmade American hooked cotton runner, circa 1920s, pairs a dramatic black field with mirrored floral arrangements at either end. Cream, peach and pale yellow details stand out against the dark ground.
The two arrangements face inward, drawing the eye along the runner. Branching stems support buds and leaves above broad, ribbon-like forms. Their soft curves contrast with the long rectangular shape.
A small cross-shaped floral ornament anchors the open centre. Its pale petals and curling extensions repeat the colours of the larger end motifs. The surrounding black space gives each element room to stand apart.
Sweeping Forms and Softly Shaded Flowers
The larger ornaments combine scalloped edges, curved bands and small floral accents. Black and blue-grey zigzags run through the sweeping forms. Burgundy flowers introduce deeper colour within the pale details.
