A solid hand-woven rattan decorative object, built around a wooden core and wrapped in two contrasting weave patterns. Open hexagonal Vienna cane covers the body. Dense basket weave finishes the top, base and border bands, creating a sculptural piece defined by texture and form.
Design and Craftsmanship
The silhouette is a gently tapered rounded rectangle, wider and flatter at the top before narrowing towards the base. Its curved underside gives the form a soft, almost pillow-like appearance.
This rounded outline contrasts with the geometric precision of the cane pattern. Repeating hexagonal openings create a regular rhythm across the body. The closely woven bands introduce a denser texture, giving the piece a clearly framed composition.
Two Contrasting Weaves
Vienna cane, also known as hexagonal cannage, brings an open pattern to the exterior. Here, it wraps a solid wooden core rather than forming the sides of a hollow basket.
The top, bottom and borders use a closed basket weave. These tighter sections contrast with the open pattern and emphasise the transitions between surfaces. No additional ornament is needed: the interest comes from the interplay of the two weaving techniques.
Material and Character
Natural rattan cane gives the object its pale honey and cream colouring. Described as unbleached and unvarnished, the surface retains a restrained, natural appearance.
The wooden interior provides the solid form beneath the woven exterior. This is a decorative object, not an opening vessel or storage basket. Its estimated date is the 1960s–1980s; maker and country of manufacture are unknown.
Display and Scale
Measuring 29 × 17 × 9 cm, the piece offers sculptural presence within a manageable size. It can sit on a console, coffee table, bookshelf or mantelpiece.
Alongside ceramics or books, its woven surface introduces a different texture. Displayed alone, the tapered shape and contrasting patterns remain the focus. Its pale colouring works particularly well within interiors centred on natural materials.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The weave is described as intact and tight, with minor fraying and isolated loose ends. These details are consistent with age. The object is stable and displayable. Please review the photographs for a closer assessment.
