About This Doll
This vintage French costume doll combines a white lace headdress, colourful checked clothing and a small woven basket. Attributed to circa 1950s–1960s, she measures approximately 20 cm tall.
Her painted face features dark brows, blue-green eye detailing, rosy cheeks and pink lips. Brown hair frames the forehead and continues into a long braid down the back.
Lace Headdress and Braided Hair
White lace surrounds the head and falls across the shoulders in a broad decorative layer. Floral motifs, open mesh and a looped scalloped edge create contrasting textures against the dark bodice.
The headdress rises at the back, giving the silhouette additional height. It is described here as Breton-style; a specific Bigouden costume identification has not been independently verified.
The long brown braid is a particularly noticeable feature in the rear views. Its woven strands extend over the checked skirt, with some loose fibres visible around the hair.
Colourful Layered Costume
A fitted black bodice has short sleeves finished with narrow white lace cuffs. The skirt combines dark teal, muted pink and black checks in a full, gathered shape.
A larger checked apron introduces brighter red, turquoise, blue, purple and cream. Its broad pattern contrasts with the smaller checks beneath, making the layered construction easy to appreciate.
A small natural-coloured woven basket hangs from the right arm. Black shoes appear beneath the skirt, and a black wire display stand supports the figure.
Origin and Period
French manufacture is supplied by the owner, who reports a “Made in France” marking. That marking is not shown in the provided photographs.
The circa-1950s–1960s date remains approximate, and no maker is identified. The stand is included, although its originality to the doll has not been established.
Condition
Good to very good overall vintage condition is reported. The clothing retains strong colour, while the black bodice shows visible surface wear and lighter patches.
The lace has some age-related irregularity and loose fibres. The brown braid remains present, with a slightly tousled appearance in the close-up views.
