An original issue of the Journal de Tintin, N°483, French Dargaud edition, dated 23 January 1958. This issue combines a humorous Chick Bill cover by Tibet with a full-page “Coke en Stock” episode by Hergé. Naval photography, pirate adventure and further illustrated features add variety to its interior.

Hergé: Coke en Stock

The back cover carries an episode of “Coke en Stock”, known in English as The Red Sea Sharks. Captain Haddock, maritime action, a red speedboat and an underwater sequence appear within the strip.

Hergé’s clear outlines and dynamic composition give the page a strong visual identity. The back cover is described as bright and well-preserved, making it a particular point of interest within this issue.

For a collector following the story’s weekly publication, this magazine offers an original serialization instalment. It also provides a different reading experience from encountering the adventure in a collected album.

Tibet’s Chick Bill Cover

The front cover presents a cowboy in a red shirt and blue jeans beside a yellow warning sign. “ATTENTION SABLES MOUVANTS” announces the danger of quicksand, while the accompanying caption supplies the joke.

The humour comes from the contrast between the completed task and the character’s predicament. It is an engaging Western composition, although the front cover has substantial handling wear.

Inside the Issue

“Grandes Écoles de France — NAVALE” is a double-page feature about the École Navale at Brest. Period photographs show naval cadets, sailing vessels and aircraft, offering a glimpse of military education in 1958.

A double-page pirate adventure signed La Fresnaye uses a warm red-and-orange palette. Its concluding episode ends with a tavern scene and the word “FIN”.

Further content includes “Daim Agile a disparu! — Alerte à Fort Mac Pherson”, with horses, fort scenes and illustrated Western characters. A photo feature introduces Colin, a ten-year-old child actor. A small Captain Haddock gag strip adds another Tintin-related element.

Condition

Fair to good overall, with clear differences between the sections. The front cover is fair, showing significant horizontal creasing, edge wear and a bent spine.

The interior is good, with intact colour pages and age-toned paper. The Hergé back cover is also good, with vivid, bright colours. Please review the photographs for a closer assessment of these condition differences.
