About This Rug
This antique hand-knotted wool rug features an all-over floral lattice against a deep navy ground. Dating to circa 1900, it combines curling red stems, angular blossoms and crisp ivory highlights.
Measuring approximately 116.8 × 160 cm, the rug has compact proportions and a richly patterned surface. Pronounced wear forms an important part of its present appearance, including several pale areas of exposed foundation.
A Rhythmic Floral Lattice
Linked stems create a repeating network across the field, enclosing small curled leaves and geometric ornaments. Larger floral forms mark the intersections, introducing rust red, ivory and muted yellow.
The design continues across the centre without a dominant medallion. This repeated arrangement gives the rug a balanced composition while allowing individual motifs to vary in colour and drawing.
Dark navy provides a strong background for the lighter details. Soft pink and touches of green introduce quieter accents among the more prominent red and ivory forms.
Blue Borders and Ivory Bands
A broad blue border surrounds the field with alternating angular flowers and branching forms. Some motifs resemble stepped leaves, while others open into pointed, star-like blossoms.
Narrow ivory patterned bands separate the principal sections. Their small geometric details provide a bright contrast to the darker field and blue border.
A burgundy outer edge completes the frame. The slightly irregular outline and worn finishing remain visible around the perimeter, rather than forming a perfectly straight rectangle.
Wool and Surface Texture
The wool pile is low and uneven, with noticeable differences between better-preserved sections and heavily worn areas. In several places, the loss of pile exposes the underlying foundation.
These pale patches interrupt the dark field and remain visible from a distance. They are substantial condition features, not simply colour changes within the original design.
Other sections retain enough pile to show the floral drawing clearly. The contrast between these surfaces gives the rug a strongly timeworn appearance.
Condition
Noticeable age-related wear, with low, uneven pile and several pronounced worn patches exposing the foundation within the field. The ends are frayed, the side edges are worn, and the outline is slightly irregular.
