About This Rug
This antique Turkish Anatolian wool rug features nested stepped medallions in ochre, burgundy and soft sage green. Dating to circa the 1910s, it combines bold geometric outlines with an angular botanical centre.
Hand-knotted in wool, the rug measures approximately 124.5 × 193 cm. Its warm palette and elongated rectangular proportions give the design a clear focal point within a relatively compact format.
Nested Stepped Medallions
An ochre medallion extends towards both ends of the field, outlined by burgundy and ivory steps. Sage-green corner areas provide a softer contrast around its sharply defined edges.
A smaller burgundy shape encloses the central botanical motif. Angular branches radiate from a red centre, introducing ivory, muted lavender and ochre details within the pale inner ground.
Small geometric ornaments fill the spaces between these larger shapes. Narrow bands of alternating coloured blocks add another layer of detail around the central composition.
A Mustard Floral Border
The broad mustard-yellow border contains a varied sequence of stylised flowers, hooked forms and angular ornaments. Rounded blossoms alternate with more open, branching motifs along the sides.
Burgundy details connect the border to the medallions, while ivory and lavender accents lighten individual forms. The changing shapes keep the repeated arrangement visually engaging.
Narrow patterned bands frame the principal sections. Their smaller geometric drawing provides a contrast to the broad medallions and larger floral ornaments.
Flatwoven Ends and Wool Texture
Flatwoven end sections remain beyond the piled borders, with burgundy and brownish tones visible in the photographs. Pale fringes extend from these ends in uneven lengths.
The folded-corner views show the patterned reverse and the transition to the flatwoven finish. These photographs also reveal differences between the more saturated reverse and the worn face.
The wool pile is low and uneven, with scattered areas exposing the underlying weave. Colour variation and reduced pile coverage form a noticeable part of the rug’s present appearance.
Condition
Age-related wear includes low pile, exposed weave, colour variation and worn side edges. Some sections of the field and border are substantially more worn than others.
The flatwoven ends remain present, with uneven fringes and localised fraying. The outline is slightly irregular rather than perfectly straight.
No specific restoration history has been established. Decorative display or gentle use in a low-traffic setting would be preferable to regular heavy foot traffic.
