About This Rug
This antique hand-knotted wool rug features an exuberant floral composition against a vivid coral-red ground. Dating to circa the 1910s, it combines symmetrical bouquets, curling leaves and a small central rosette.
Measuring approximately 142.2 × 106.7 cm, the rug brings a bold decorative pattern to a compact rectangular format. Deep blue flowers and dark outlines give the warm field a particularly clear, graphic appearance.
Branching Floral Bouquets
Mirrored bouquets extend along the central axis, opening into clusters of rounded blossoms and pointed leaves. Slender stems connect these forms, with olive green and cream details distinguishing individual branches.
A small rosette marks the centre without becoming a dominant medallion. Around it, larger flowers and leaf clusters create a balanced arrangement across the coral ground.
Pale blue curved leaves soften the darker outlines, while dusty pink introduces quieter accents. The varied scale of the flowers keeps the composition lively without losing its underlying symmetry.
A Broad Navy Floral Border
The main navy border carries oversized scrolling flowers and curling stems. Coral, pink, blue and green details repeat colours from the field, linking the frame to the central design.
Narrow floral guard bands separate the larger sections. Their small leaves and blossoms provide a finer pattern beside the broad border’s more expansive drawing.
The strong contrast between coral and navy gives the rug definition from a distance. Closer viewing reveals smaller stems, delicate outlines and variations within individual flowers.
Wool and Antique Surface
The wool pile is low and uneven, with scattered worn patches revealing the underlying weave. Some floral details retain stronger pile, while other areas have a more reduced surface.
