About This Rug
This antique hand-knotted wool rug combines an elongated brick-red field with deep blue side panels and a pale central medallion. Dating to circa 1900, it features sharply serrated outlines and an intricate arrangement of geometric flowers.
Measuring approximately 132.1 × 188 cm, the rug has versatile proportions for a study, bedside setting or intimate seating area. Its design balances a strong central shape with densely patterned surrounding sections.
A Pale Central Medallion
The ivory-toned medallion contains a branching lattice of slender dark stems, small rosettes and angular floral details. Pointed extensions at either end connect it to smaller diamond-shaped pendants.
Pale blue outlines give the medallion clear definition against the brick-red ground. Additional flowers and stylised leafy forms occupy the surrounding field without obscuring its elongated shape.
A serrated ivory contour separates the red centre from the blue panels. Its repeated points create a particularly strong graphic rhythm along both sides of the composition.
Blue Floral Side Panels
Rows of small geometric blossoms fill the deep blue areas, alternating cream, burgundy, muted gold and softer blue details. Thin connecting stems organise these motifs into closely spaced sequences.
The smaller flowers contrast with the larger medallion, giving the design interest at different scales. Some blossoms have rounded centres, while others take the form of angular stars or diamonds.
