Hand made vintage Indian Agra rug 2.3' x 4.5' ( 70cm x 137cm ) 1970 - 1C377
Agra rugs are the most highly sought after of the 19th century Antique Indian rugs today. Agra rugs were extremely well made heavy durable rugs and are considered the best of Indian rugs in the post-Mughal period. Not surprisingly since Agra was a major production center for the best of the classical Mughal Carpets. Agra was the most prominent of the three centers of carpet production and carpet production was founded there by the Empower Akbar grandson of Akbar founder of the Mughal Empire.
Much of the production in the 19th and into the 20th centuries was organized by British and American producers so Agra rugs are a combination of classical Persian, Turkish and Mughal designs. For the same reason all sizes were produced. Agra rugs were the heaviest Indian rug of its day and the pile was longer. Thus creating a long lasting and durable carpet. For these reasons today there are great Antique Agra rugs in large and very large sizes.
An interesting oddity in the market are the Jail carpets. Many great rugs were woven by prisoners in Agra prisons. These rugs are equal to the best of Agra production and were made under British supervision. When new it was not lawful to import them to the US as any product made in jail was embargoed. But now they are completely legal and are among the most sought after Antique Agra rugs.
